GOOGLE AND SHOPIFY PARTNERSHIP IS IMPROVING THE E-COMMERCE LANDSCAPE

June 18, 2021

It’s no secret that e-commerce has seen a rise due to Covid-19. It’s also no secret that people’s usual go-to is Amazon. Well, a new enhanced Google and Shopify partnership is trying to change that. Why does that matter? Because these two companies are the most likely to be actual competitors to the online shopping giant. The ripple effect of these companies clashing can influence your business for the better.

Google Announcing New Marketing Tools

Announced in May 2021 at its yearly I/O conference, Google talked about its latest steps to boost the e-commerce market. They want to do this through an enhanced partnership with Shopify and new product search tools.

The newly expanded partnership will help streamline the process to put products onto Google “in just a few clicks.”

There aren’t specific updates to how this will all work out, but these tools are supposed to make it easier for sellers to list their products on the search engine.

Google Lens

One new search tool is to make a suggestion prompt within Google Photos to help customers find products within pictures. What this means is if a customer is looking at an image, there will be an option to search the photo to find the items within it on sale.

Reducing Shopping Cart Abandonment

A new module in Chrome will highlight any open carts people have all over the web. This is not only a friendly reminder, but it makes it easier to revisit pages.

Linking Loyalty Accounts

Google is also working on a way to allow users to link their favorite store loyalty programs to their Google account. This will highlight any deals, coupons, and additional purchase options when people check out.

Shopping Graph

Google wants to help further improve how people buy things online with the creation of Shopping Graph. It’s an AI-enhanced model that’ll be able to keep track of and adjust to constantly changing products, sellers, brands, and reviews.

Shopping Graph is designed to help make shopping easier for consumers by offering more relevant results from all over the world.

How Google has Already Help E-Commerce Businesses Like Yours

In April 2020, Google got rid of all its charges for Google Shopping product listings. This was to help sellers who may be struggling during the pandemic. It also happened to increase its product catalog by 70% and get an 80% merchants increase, which was mostly small to medium-sized businesses. They say they will continue to not have any fees for the foreseeable future.

Many sellers get frustrated with Amazon’s fees which can take out a quarter of every sale, and that doesn’t include paying for advertising. It’s hard to have a direct relationship with customers too, due to the limited ability to talk to consumers.

Google wants to change all that and boost your business rather than keeping it contained within their business.

How Does All This Affect Shopify Merchants?

Having an even more connected partnership with Google means that Shopify merchants will be able to easily put and promote their products onto the search engine and Shopping Graph. This means they’re more likely to get more sales from users looking for their kind of products.

Not only is it good for Shopify merchants, but for all e-commerce businesses in general.

Why is Google Doing All This?

Google isn’t exactly known for its e-commerce, but it’s thought that Google is jumping into the fray to be an equal competitor to Amazon. Amazon has been putting more money into its advertising business, which directly threatens Google’s core ad businesses. There are reports from fall 2020 saying that some advisers were starting to leave Google for Amazon.

Though Google isn’t saying that’s the reason for this change. Instead, Google is saying that it wants to democratize e-commerce.

Bill Ready, Google President of Commerce and Payments said:

“When it comes to shopping, what we’re trying to build out and support is a free and open commerce ecosystem. This is really important for consumers to have choice, and especially for small and mid-sized businesses to be able to participate in the rise of digital commerce as well.”
