HOW TO PREPARE THE PERFECT PRINT FILES

December 16, 2020

Your success online with your print-on-demand store relies on a variety of things, but one of the most important is creating quality designs. It all starts with creating quality print files. When you create quality files with the right designs, your customers will love them. You’ll have raving fans in no time.

We have some important information and tips to help you on your way to success with your GearLaunch store.

Print File Basics: Terminology

Before you get started working on your designs and print files, it’s important to understand the terminology you’ll find when we talk about design. Let’s dig in.

Print Size: This refers to the actual size of the image when it’s printed on the product. We typically list them in inches.

Image File Size: The file size refers to how much space your image file takes up on a drive or disk. When you’re ready to upload your design to your GearLaunch store, you can’t exceed 200MB.

Pixel: This is a unit of measurement used to describe the digital images you see online.

Resolution: A digital image’s size is expressed in the total number of pixels in width and height. GearLaunch has a minimum width of 1600px and a maximum width of 20,000px.

DPI (Dots per Inch): This is strictly a printing term. While digital images are displayed using pixels, printers print images in dots. The DPI is calculated based on your digital image’s pixel dimensions and size. A higher DPI means more dots per inch and a sharper print.

Guidelines for Creating GearLaunch Print Files

Now that you know the basics, it’s time to start designing.

Accepted Print File Formats: GearLaunch accepts JPEG and PNG files for all prints. We recommend using PNG files for all DGT (direct to garment) for the best print.

Print File Resolution (DPI): Creating a design with a higher DPI is always recommended for the best print. When in doubt, create your design at 300 DPI.

Color Profile: We highly recommend using the CMYK color profile for your prints. CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key (another word for black). When you use this color profile, you’re more likely to have your digital image match the final print. It gives customers a better idea of what to expect when they receive the products they ordered. You can learn more about color best practices here.

If you’re using Photoshop, you can also use the “Gamut Warning Tool” which will highlight problem areas.

Acceptable Content: Remember, your designs need to follow copyright and trademark guidelines to avoid any type of infringement. The best practice is to always create an original design.
